Have you ever felt stuck in a bit of a rut? I have. A while ago I was managing a tricky project at my property development business, getting bogged down in significant planning delays and generally feeling like I was pushing against the flow of life, or some kind of natural order. I was happy in my life – with my beautiful family and a business that was, aside from that one site, going extremely well – yet I felt like something was missing, and I couldn’t quite put my finger on what that ‘something’ was. I had heard a lot about meditation, but I thought it was all a bit wishy-washy and not really for people like me, people who are focused on building success and wealth. But, because I believe in giving things a try, even if they’re way out of my comfort zone, I decided to try it out. I had used some basic mindfulness techniques back when I was a few years younger, and found them helpful, so I started by reintroducing those techniques. From there, I began to really explore meditation. Now, I understand that the ‘missing something’ in my life was the ability to live in and enjoy the moment. I was focusing way too much on the future and the past, rather than the present. If I was stressed about something, I couldn’t just set it aside and enjoy a couple of minutes playing with my kids, because whatever that stress was would stay in the back of my mind. By learning just a few simple meditation techniques and using them regularly, I became fully aware of how little I was living in the here and now. Meditation taught me to let go of stresses and strains, whether it is the past stress of a difficult project that is now long finished, or the present stress of a full inbox or a pressing deadline. Now, regardless of what’s going on, if my kids wander into the room, I can set aside stresses, put down the laptop and enjoy that moment with them, wholeheartedly. That’s an amazing gift.
