It all started with a spark of an idea. Bill had reached a turning point in life and decided he wanted to help others. Over coffee, he shared his dream with me: “I want to start a non-profit,” he said, “for men who hit rock bottom. Not counselling, but something more… hands-on. Healing through nature—camping, hiking, cooking outdoors. I used to be an outdoorsman, and I think it could make a real difference.”

“Brilliant,” I said. “Scouts for grownups, right?” We both laughed, but Bill was serious. “I want to build a community for men, free of charge, where they can escape their struggles and connect with others.”

The idea was powerful. But as the conversation shifted, so did Bill’s confidence. “I’ve never run a charity before,” he admitted. “I’m excited but also daunted by the steps involved, funding, organising, everything.”

His concern struck a chord. How many of us have a big dream but get stuck in the overwhelming “how” of it all?

Start Small to Dream Big

Here’s where things often go wrong: we think of goals as these massive, life-changing feats. But really, success comes from breaking those big dreams down into small, manageable steps.

When Bill was feeling overwhelmed, I reminded him of a simple truth: goals don’t have to be monumental to make a difference. Bill had started rebuilding his life by setting tiny, daily goals like practicing gratitude and laying out his gym clothes the night before. These weren’t grand gestures, but they were steps in the right direction.

And that’s the point: small wins matter. They add up. They create momentum. They build habits.

Bill’s Journey to Better Sleep: A Mini-Goal Success Story

Bill had been struggling with sleep, his brain buzzing with worries. So, I asked him to set a series of mini-goals—simple actions that might help him rest better. No caffeine after midday, no screens before bed, and reading a book instead of scrolling on his phone. Within weeks, his sleep had improved. It wasn’t perfect, but each small change was contributing to a bigger, healthier outcome.

Bill’s success wasn’t due to a drastic overhaul. It was the result of consistently hitting mini-goals that were within his reach. And that’s a lesson we can all take to heart.

How to Make Your Big Dreams a Reality

If you’ve got a big dream, don’t let the enormity of it paralyse you. Here’s how to break it down and get started today:

  1. Start with a small goal: No goal is too small. Start with something you can achieve today. It could be as simple as sending an email or doing 15 minutes of research.

  2. Create daily habits: Set a daily routine that pushes you forward. It could be as minor as making your bed every morning (yes, there’s science behind the mood boost) or spending 10 minutes on gratitude.

  3. Build momentum: Each small win, no matter how insignificant it may seem, will give you the energy to keep moving forward.

  4. Connect your small goals to your big “why”: Know why you’re striving for a certain outcome. If you want to start a new career, making your bed in the morning may seem unrelated—but it’s a small success that sets the tone for the day.

  5. Be kind to yourself: Don’t get discouraged if things aren’t happening overnight. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither will your dream non-profit, new business, or life goal.

Action Plan: Start Now

Take a moment today to set some mini-goals that bring you closer to your own big vision. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Write down one small action you can take today towards your goal.

  • Identify a daily habit that will build momentum (e.g., make your bed, start a gratitude practice, exercise for 10 minutes).

  • Reflect on your “why” and remind yourself daily of what you’re working toward.

  • Break down your big dream into steps and tackle one small piece each day.

  • Celebrate your wins, no matter how small!

Remember, big dreams are built on small victories. If you want to change the world—or even just change your life—it starts with something as simple as making your bed. Let’s take those first steps together!
